True To Your Heart

Around two weeks from now, restaurants will be full to the nauseating brim with couples being… well, obnoxiously couple-y. I’ve already covered a couple of outfit ideas for those of you who might be surprised with cute dates for Valentines Day… but fear not! I haven’t forgot about my single sisters. No boyfriend/husband? This doesn’t mean you don’t get to have an awesome day, just because you’re single. In a recent conversation with a very close girlfriend of mine, we managed to coin the term “Galentines day”. You’re looking at me funny. I can see you from here. Traditionally, Valentine’s Day when you’re single spawns depression, and sappy movies in the house alone. Well… Sap no more! Why be by yourself, when you can be with other completely amazing single girls? Why cry when you can have a completely amazing day or night with your best girlfriends?

So… here’s my plan. Have a Galentine’s Day. Invite your girls over for a great night devoted to loving…. Each other!! (not in a lesbian way… unless you really want to.) To follow, I have recipes and plans for an amazing girl party. The only fight will be who gets to host it!

Recently, there has been a development in “Partying for a reason.” I received an invitation to a “Girls’ Night In” for a cousin’s birthday. The concept is beautiful, which is why I’m suggesting it be used for a Galentine’s day party. The idea comes to us from the Canadian Cancer Society. Slip on over to the website at http://convio.cancer.ca/site/PageNavigator/Ontario/Girls%20Night%20In/IFE_ON_GirlsNightIn_home to get all the details, but I have the synopsis. Basically, as the hostess of a “Girl’s Night In,” you sign up via the link provided, and when you mail your invitations out, you ask your guests not to bring anything other than the money that they would normally spend on a night out on the town to donate to women’s cancer research (that being breast, cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers). I’m pretty sure that’s a cause we can all get behind.

So, running with that completely amazing and worthwhile concept, I themed the party. You don’t have to go crazy and buy streamers or anything, but I did pink up the snacks.

Obviously this is a GIRLS’ night in, so we’re going to need a chocolate fix, right? How do brownies sound to you? Even for those of us who do our baking from mixes, brownies are really easy, and tend to go over really well, especially with female guests. If you prefer to do your baking from outside the box, try www.brownierecipes.net for some easy recipes, with several variations like Apple brownies, or even peanut butter brownies.

If you’re having a really big chocolate craving, or you think your guests might be, it’s also possible to get cute pink M&M’s. These come in brown bags, which also contribute to your party’s cause; a portion of the proceeds go to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure. These would look really cute in a little jar, fishbowl, or even a huge bowl on their own. You can also toss them into your brownies if you want.

Now, you’ve got yourself some food to offer… what do you do with these guests? Well, a traditional plan would be to do a movie night. Personally, I don’t see why not. BUT, I would suggest that in lieu of your regular, run of the mill romantic comedies, that you go for something different. Maybe “The Hangover,” or something scary, like “Paranormal Activity,” or heck, if you’re in the right frame of mind, head for a Disney classic. You can’t ever go wrong with snacks and “Toy Story.” The choice is, as always, yours.

There are other possibilities, too; if your girls are Kareoke goddesses, or shopaholics, you can run with that too. You know your girlfriends better than I do, so only you will know what will make for the best night ever. You have no limits, other than those you set for yourself. So, gather your girls, make some of your favourite snacks, and have yourselves an excellent Galentines day!
